Good morn’ ladies and gentlemen, yes this is another email from me, Elder Joe Rivera. Today was a kind of interesting week so I decided to write a quick email even though I wrote one just last week. What made this week interesting was the big annual XIT Rodeo and Barbecue. Its a pretty big deal hear in small little Dalhart. A bunch of people from all around will come to it it is 3 days long and they have food every day. I'll get to other details later on but would you believe they do the biggest free barbecue in the world? No wonder so many people show up.
That stuff all started Thursday although the week after P-day started Tuesday. On Tuesday we did exchanges with the elders in Dumas. I went down there with them to talk to their people who only speak Spanish and teach them some lessons. The next day I was back in Dalhart and we taught a few lessons they all went well only one of them was In Spanish but it was good. In the evening we had a lesson with a dude who thought ŵe were kinda crazy for believing Jesus talked to the native Americans I suppose we didn't put it correctly or something.
Thursday we were busy mainly just service in the morning we helped out washing dishes at the senior center, we came back and changed and went out to help out at XIT turns out we'd be in charge of opening and closing the gates. I was over taking care of the gate for the handicapped parking and a little bit in they brought some watermelon (as that's what they were serving Thursday) to have while managing the gate. We did that until 7 and we went to go to teach English class.
We didn't help out with service on Friday due to the appointments we had set up prior, but for dinner we did head over to get some pork chops and potatoes at dinner time. Our lessons went well a few were in Spanish but nothing crazy exciting happened.
There was a parade through town on Saturday morning so naturally us the elders pulled up and saw it. It was pretty long there were a lot of police cars and a lot of tractors so you definitely know we were in Texas. The parade lasted about an hour and we went home for lunch. In the afternoon we went back out to help with the gates. And let me tell you it was packed for the final day this was the day of the big barbecue there were so many people naturally a lot of people were trying to get in and park in the handicapped lot so we stayed plenty busy. Once they started serving the food they brought us out each a plate with the meat and some beans. It was good food man—good ‘ol Texas bbq they also had beans and slices of white bread. It started raining at around 7 and it poured down for a little while no lightning this time so they kept the rodeo going. On Thursday they had to cancel the rodeo because of lightning. Anyway some nice people gave me an umbrella so it was fine.
Yesterday was Sunday. We had church back in the branch building as changes were made to make it suitable to meet in. After church we made a lot of contacts all over town. We finally had a lesson with our friend Abel who we've been trying to contact for a while it was real great. After dinner we had a few more lessons one of them with brothers from Guatemala who we've been teaching.
Well this email was actually a bit longer than I intended it to be I sure don't blame those who did not make it to this part but that was the week. Next week should be a little more normal. But anyway see you
